Changing Smiles with Porcelain Veneers in Scarborough
Have you ever looked at your smile in the mirror, and thought to yourself, “I wish I could undo this dental wear?” Chips, cracks, and stains that, on their own, didn’t seem so bad add up overtime. At White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer patients the ability to hit the reset button on their smile with porcelain veneers.
What is a Porcelain Veneer?
A porcelain veneer is a thin sheath of dental porcelain that fits over the front of teeth concealing chips, cracks, stains, and other smile irregularities. In order to visualize the veneer more clearly, we tell patients the veneer is similar in appearance to a tooth-shaped sliver of egg shell. In cases where patients wish to conceal chips, cracks, stains, gaps, and other unflattering parts of their smile, veneers are an excellent option. Because they’re crafted from sturdy, dental-grade porcelain, veneers are extremely durable, long-lasting, and stain resistant. Without removing a significant amount of dental structure, porcelain veneers completely change smiles.
How is a Porcelain Veneer Placed?
One of the best things about porcelain veneers is how easily they can be placed. At White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage patients to choose restorative and cosmetic treatment options that preserve the optimal amount of natural dental structure while accomplishing the desired results, and porcelain veneers are a great option to dramatically transform smiles without complex restorative or cosmetic treatments. Once we determine that veneers are the right option, the entire transformation takes place over two visits. During the first visit, the patient’s teeth are prepared by removing a minimal amount of surface enamel, so the veneer is in line with the patient’s smile. Once teeth are prepared, we take impressions and x-rays that a dental lab uses to create a custom, porcelain veneer. Then, we place a temporary veneer that is worn to protect teeth while the customized restoration is crafted. Patients return to our office after their porcelain veneer is created. We then remove the temporary, and firmly cement the veneer in place.
Porcelain Veneer After-Care Instructions
For the most part, your daily oral hygiene routine should stay the same: brush two times each day and floss once. However, there are few things patients should keep in mind.
- Make sure you use a non-abrasive tooth paste as abrasive pastes will remove the polish that gives veneers their brilliant sparkle. Ask your dentist for recommendations.
- Remind your dental hygienist and inform any new practice that you have veneers, so they use a non-abrasive polish during your professional cleaning.
- Toss out anything whitening: toothpaste, mouth wash, gels, etc. The chemical effect that makes natural tooth enamel a brighter white actually damages veneers.
