Are you struggling with halitosis? Don’t despair; there are ways to bring a breath of fresh air your way. These include regular brushing and flossing, avoiding tobacco, and seeing your dentist in Scarborough for routine cleanings and exams. Let’s begin by examining some of the common causes of bad breath.

When Good Breath Goes Bad

Bad breath can stem from any number of causes. In most cases however, the problem can be traced back to one of these factors:

  • Diet: those with a taste for spicy food are familiar with this phenomena. Garlic, onions, etc., can be hard on the stomach as well as the breath.
  • Oral hygiene problems: bad breath is often the first sign that you’re on the road to tooth decay or gum disease.
  • Poor saliva production: your body needs an adequate supply of water to produce this important fluid. Lack of saliva leads to germ buildup in the mouth and, ultimately, bad breath.
  • Tobacco use: all forms of tobacco can have devastating effects, not only for your breath but for your overall health. The same is true for vaping devices.
  • Acidic beverages: coffee, soda, tea, and alcohol consumption can all contribute to halitosis.
  • Medication side effects: for example, certain types of antibiotics can cause bad breath as a side effect.

 Tips for Controlling Bad Breath

Now that we’ve looked a little closer at the problem of bad breath, let’s consider some of the solutions:

  • Brushing and flossing: not only does regular oral hygiene reduce your chances of cavities, it also removes smelly bacteria from your mouth. You may also want to add mouthwash or anti-plaque dental rinse to your tooth care regimen.
  • Altering your diet: we’re not asking you to give up your favorite foods. But, if your bad breath is making your friends shun you, then you may want to consider making nutritional changes. You can also try keeping a few sugar-free mints or sticks of gum handy as an after-dinner treat.
  • Drinking more water: increasing your water intake is the single best way you can help your body to make more saliva. If you continue to have this problem, then you may want to consult with your doctor or physician, as dry mouth can be a warning sign of certain medical conditions.
  • Switching formulas: if you suspect that your medicine is causing your bad breath, then talk to your dentist about switching to a different prescription. You should never alter or discontinue any medication without express medical approval.
  • Kick the habit: this tip applies specifically to tobacco users. Your dentist can recommend new medications to help you stay smoke-free for good.
  • Try parsley tablets: you’ll find these online and at many health food stores. They may be just what the doctor ordered. You can also try munching on a sprig of fresh parsley after a meal.

Most causes of halitosis can be identified and the problem corrected. Try the self-help solutions mentioned in this post or ask your dentist for further advice. You’ll soon be on your way to sweeter breath and sunnier days.
