The American Dental Association recommends that everyone over the age of two has a routine dental appointment every 6 months. However, only 64% of adults saw their dentist last year. While there are various factors that may keep you away from our office, the leading reason people avoid preventive care is due to fears and phobias. In fact, as much as 15% of Americans delay dental care due to fear. Now, you can stop feeling anxious and make your oral health a priority with sedation dentistry in Scarborough. Dr. Samantha Amaro is specially trained to safely and effectively help you feel at ease during your appointments.
Conquer Your Dental Fears
Dental fears can be the result of various issues, such as embarrassment from not seeing your dentist sooner. However, it can also be due to a poor experience in the past or the fear of needing a painful, invasive treatment. In some cases, you may even be afraid of the office itself as the sights, sounds, and smells can be overwhelming. No matter the reason behind your discomfort, you can conquer it and enjoy your time in our office with sedation.
Relax with Sedation Dentistry
As your dentist in Scarborough, Dr. Amaro is specially trained to offer two types of sedation: nitrous oxide and oral conscious. After discussing your concerns and evaluating your personal comfort level, she will determine which will be the most beneficial to you.
Nitrous Oxide: Better known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for well over 100 years. The sedative is delivered by inhalation via a mask that is placed over the mouth and nose. As you breathe in, you will begin to feel relaxed and content. You will no longer be aware of your discomforts as you reach euphoria. After your procedure, the effects of the medication will dissipate quickly so you can resume your normal activities the same day.
Oral Conscious Sedation: The prescribed medication is taken orally prior to your appointment. Often, it is recommended for those who have mild to moderate fears. You will take the medication at home, so you will need to arrange for someone to drive you to your appointment. As it takes effect, you will feel fully relaxed to the point you will probably fall asleep. However, you will remain conscious so you can respond to verbal ques. After your appointment, your loved one will take you home and the effects will wear off shortly. However, you will need to take it easy for the remainder of the day.
