kids oral hygieneAt White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we are committed to creating healthy smiles to last a lifetime. Part of fulfilling that dream involves teaching children the importance of oral hygiene while they are young so they continue to make it a priority into adulthood. However, we all know that many children view oral hygiene as a chore. Thankfully, there are many ways you can make oral care fun and exciting. If you’re battling with your kids’ oral hygiene, stop the fight with fun tips and tricks for brushing and flossing.

Make It a Family Event

The first step to teaching the importance of oral hygiene is to set a good example. Brush and floss your teeth together as a family. You can share your favorite brushing methods while helping them care for their teeth and gums. This not only provides time together as a family, but also offers a learning experience to help create a strong healthy foundation for a beautiful smile.

Play Their Favorite Song

It’s recommended you brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, but 2 minutes can seem like an eternity for a child. Turn on their favorite song and require them to brush until the song is over. They can dance around and sing along all while caring for their teeth.

Fun Toothpastes and Brushes

If your child doesn’t like the toothbrush or toothpaste they have, getting them to brush and floss their teeth is going to be an even bigger challenge. Let them pick out a toothbrush and toothpaste they will actually be excited to use to make them look forward to caring for their teeth.

Reward System

Children, especially young children, like to be rewarded when they do something right. Create a sticker chart or a healthy reward system so they can see their accomplishments. Once their sticker chart is filled up, take them out for a special day at the park or for a healthy treat.

Learn Together

Often, when you tell your child to do something, they will resist. They want explanations and reasons why they should do something. Use fun books and videos to help drive home the point that they need to care for their teeth and mouth. Take the time to discuss what they just learned and how they can implement it into their day.

Make It a Special Day

After your child’s routine dental visit, make a day of it by having a fun activity planned after the appointment. Children will look forward to going to the dentist because they know they will get to spend special time with you afterward. No matter if you’re going to a movie, heading out for ice cream, or talking a walk, you’ll give them something to look forward to after each appointment.

As a family dentist in Scarborough, we understand the struggle you face when trying to teach kids oral hygiene habits. Use these easy and fun tricks to make caring for their teeth fun. With a positive outlook on oral care as a child, they will take care of their teeth as adults.
