For anyone suffering from alignment or bite issues that harm the appearance and function of their teeth, it’s never too late to start orthodontic treatment if you’re an ideal candidate. However, many are unaware when it’s actually the best time to start orthodontic care. Generally, you want your child to have an orthodontic consultation around the age of seven. While this doesn’t mean they will need orthodontics at this point, it can help prevent additional problems down the road. At White Willow Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer orthodontic treatment for patients of all ages.
Stages to Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatment doesn’t always involve the use of braces. There are various procedures and devices that can be used to prevent more severe complications later in life. The earlier treatment is sought; the less likely more severe complications will develop.
Orthodontics is generally broken down into three stages. The first stage, around the age of 2 to 6 years old is Early Treatment. During early treatment, the child’s mouth will be evaluated to address any areas of concern, such as premature tooth loss and bad habits that can impact teeth alignment, such as thumb sucking. As this time, preventative measures are taken to ensure the adult teeth emerge in the correct positions.
The second stage of treatment is called Mixed Dentition, which occurs from the ages of 6 to 12 years old. As the adult teeth begin to erupt, issues with alignment and jaw malrelationships are addressed. This is generally an ideal time to start treatment because the tissue is still soft, making it more responsive to correction.
Stage three of treatment is known as Adolescent Dentition, which involves the permanent teeth. During this time, treatment involves creating the perfect final bite to have a beautiful smile throughout adulthood.
Starting Orthodontic Treatment
While it is better to start orthodontic care while you’re young, adults can still benefit from an orthodontist. Treatment is available for adults who face alignment and bite problems. While many adults are hesitant to seek orthodontic care due to the fear of braces, now there are many advancements that allow adults to correct their smile with discreet methods, such as Invisalign.
At White Willow Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer a number of orthodontic treatments to create beautiful smiles for your entire family. In addition to traditional orthodontics, such as ceramic braces and traditional braces, we also provide early intervention for children. With early intervention, we’ll help significantly reduce the amount of time braces may need to be worn in the future.
During your orthodontic care with us, we will help you with the proper oral hygiene procedures to ensure your teeth stay healthy throughout the duration of the treatment. We’ll show you how to remove plaque and clean hard to reach hiding places to prevent tooth decay during treatment.
No matter if your child needs early intervention or you’re an adult wanting to correct your smile with Invisalign, we have the orthodontic treatments you need for a straight smile.
