The Disadvantages of Crooked Teeth

Orthodontics can help patients overcome the disadvantages of crooked teeth.Whether you’re an adult or a child, having teeth that are crooked or misaligned can cause you to feel embarrassed or self-conscious about your smile. Feeling too embarrassed to laugh, talk or smile freely definitely takes its toll. You may be too self-conscious to audition for the lead role in the school play, so you settle for the chorus. Or perhaps, it’s closing the deal with the new client at work that terrifies you because you have to make a presentation, and this keeps you from getting that promotion you deserve. The disadvantages of crooked teeth definitely go deeper than we might like to admit. The good news is that orthodontics can help, and the even better news is that there are different options for orthodontics available at White Willow Family and Cosmetic Dentistry.

How Do Misaligned Teeth Affect My Oral Health?

Besides affecting your confidence, crooked teeth can have an impact on your oral health as well. Teeth that are misaligned are harder to keep clean; food gets trapped more often causing more plaque buildup. Excess plaque build up that’s hard to remove can lead to periodontal or gum disease, or decay and cavities.

With crooked teeth, you’re put at a greater risk for a joint disorder known as TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder. This occurs when your bite is not aligned correctly and your jaw joint has to compensate, causing painful headaches or popping and clicking of your joint when you talk or chew.

How Can Orthodontics Help?

Besides providing you with a beautifully aligned smile, orthodontics can also correct many bite issues, alleviating issues such as TMJ. Your teeth will also be easier to keep clean, which will improve your oral health. Not to mention that being able to smile will help your confidence soar!

Traditional braces use clear or metal brackets and a wire to gradually move your teeth over time. Traditional braces require adjustment appointments every two or three weeks to ensure that teeth are moving properly. Patients using traditional braces can usually expect their treatment to be completed anywhere from 18 to 24 months.

White Willow Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is also proud to offer Invisalign, which is a great orthodontic option for busy adults or teens, or those with sensitivities to metal. Dr. Samantha Amaro is a certified Invisalign provider, and she’s excited to offer patients an option for orthodontics that is not noticeable.

Instead of using traditional brackets, Invisalign straightens teeth over time with a series of clear plastic aligners. Patients change the aligners every two weeks and can remove them for brushing or meals. Because they are clear, they’re hardly noticeable when you talk or smile, and they require fewer adjustment visits than traditional braces. Invisalign cases take anywhere from 12 to 18 months to complete and the result is a beautiful smile that you can be proud of.
